This is how you change your original driving license to Spanish
A valid driving license from their country of origin can be used by tourists from the countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EU/EEA). The same rule applies if you are from an EU/EEA country and have a residence in Spain.

However, if you are a resident of Spain and if your country’s driving license is about to expire or has already expired, you must renew this permit for a Spanish permit.
Also, if you have a driver’s license from your country with an indefinite term or a validity longer than 15 years and you have legal residence in Spain then you must renew your driver’s license two years after obtaining this residence. When the time has come to renew your driving license, you must take into account the requirements that are requested:
- Application form
- NIE, passport and residence
- Original driving license
- Medical report (Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores)
- A photograph 32x26mm
- Talon photo
- Fee of € 23.80
The renewal of A driving license is done at the Traffic Headquarters (DGT). There are two of them on the Costa Blanca, Alicante and Elche. Follow the link to the office that suits you to see the address and opening hours.
The process is very simple and quick. Take care not to leave any of your original documents.
THEORETICAL EXAM FOR DRIVING LICENSE
The failure rate is high in Spain, so you better prepare properly. There are forty questions and you can only fail on three. If you fail the test three times you have to pay a new fee and start over again.
The test is told to be hard but, driving schools are after all designed to help students pass the test.
Some driving schools have the test available in different languages, so make sure the school you choose has this option before you sign in.
Another option is to get an international driving license in your country of origin or over the Internet.
They are very inexpensive (around 30€, are valid for one year and are accepted by the Guardia Civil.)
SPANISH DRIVING LICENCE RENEWALS
Up to the age of 65 years of the permit holder, the permit is valid for 10 years. After 65 years, the permit must be renewed every 5 years.

• moped: 14 (with parental permission)
• moped with a passenger: 16
• agricultural machinery: 16
• car; motorcycle; truck: 18
