A walk in a nature park
Spending a day at the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja is a perfect way to spend a day surrounded by nature in this beautiful natural park.
It is a very simple route, well signposted and full of vegetation. It has picnic areas, many viewpoints, and bird observatories, the great treasures of this park. The trail is very wide and without slopes, ideal for sports, walking with children, and pets. A little-known place, that’s full of natural charm. We invite you to visit and enjoy it.
How to get to the lagunas de la Mata?
The park is between Torrevieja and Guardamar and is well indicated with road signs. However, we do recommend using your car or cell phone’s GPS. Upon arrival, there is a fairly large car park where you can park your car without worries.
One attractiveness of this destination is its easy access. You can drive your car all the way up to the start of the trail path. Here you can start the route with a visit to the visitor’s center of the natural park. This makes spending a day at the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja so much more fun.
Things to do in the natural park
The route is well maintained, has good signaling, and is very quiet. There are many vegetation areas, with large pines and eucalyptus trees, which give abundant shade. During the tour, you encounter several viewpoints, great for observing the surroundings and seeing the different aquatic birds which inhabit the salt marsh; such as storks, and flamingos. The Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja have one of the largest populations of Flamingos in Spain.
The viewpoints also offer a close-up of the vegetation surrounding the lagoon, in order to appreciate the immense tranquility of the place. We recommend that you bring along your binoculars, so you can see and appreciate the wildlife, even the animals further away.
An important fact; the edge of the Laguna de la Mata and its fenced areas, is “Integral Reserve Areas”, and we must not enter them.
There are several picnic areas to rest in the shades, to have lunch or a snack while enjoying a cool breeze, and maybe small squirrels that live here.
Also, during the summer months, you’ll see that the waters of the lagoon are dyed pink. This is because the algae and bacteria that inhabit the lagoon multiply due to the heat, thus causing this coloring effect in the water. We hope you like it as much as we do.
