Today we have prepared a blog about the wine culture of Costa Blanca. And in particular, the wine routes of the province of Alicante where there a various wineries present.

We can enjoy a wide range of experiences to discover a different side of the Mediterranean.

The wines that have their origin in Alicante province can be divided into two landscape regions. First, there is the Vinalopó region to the south of the city of Alicante. This region consists of Algueña, Monóvar and Novelda. Together with Petrer, Pinoso as well as Salinas, Villena and Elche. The second region is the Marina Alta and Baja north of the capital. The towns of Alcalalí, Benissa and Senija, as well as Llíber, Benigembla and Parcent, belong to this region. As do the villages of Castell de Castells, Murla and Parcent, Xaló, and last but not least Alfaz del Pi.

Wine routes in the Viñalopo region

In the region south of Alicante there is the Vinalopó Medio route. This route starts with a visit to Bocopa Bodegas, a large winery that produces some of the inimitable Mediterranean wines. They offer guided tours and tastings of their products. There are different tours to choose from, such as one that includes a visit to the winery, or tastings and gastronomic offers. One even includes rural accommodation.

In the active village of Pinoso, we find different wineries. Such as la Bodega de Pinoso, with its large building of the beginning of the last century. They offer a visit that includes the tasting of four of their wines accompanied by a local appetizer. Other Bodegas in Pinoso are Volver, Vivanza or El Sequé.

El Sequé offers us two options to choose from. A visit with wine tasting or the option to try tapas while we taste their wines as well.
Villena, in the South of the Viñalopo, is home to a large number of wineries. As we approach Salinas, you can visit a winery, with lots of charm, surrounded by vineyards such as Finca Collado.

Salinas Valley

In the Salinas Valley, we can visit the spectacular Francisco Gómez Winery located around the green and rounded hills. They offer the possibility of immersing oneself in the culture of wine through four types of routes (enological, enogastronomical, and enocultural as well as enological trivium). Another winery in this valley is the Sierra Salinas Winery. A small winery located in a unique enclave in the Sierra de Salinas.

The Bodegas Heretat de Cesilia, in Noveda, also are part of the Vinalopó South route. Here in Heretat de Cesilia, the visitor can choose three types of visits: Classic, Picoteo (small snacks) or Pairing (food and wine).

Another very interesting option to visit is Bodegas Faelo, in the small village of Matola (Elche). A small and unique winery with a tradition in the wine sector for more than 100 years. This family business has recovered the cultivation of the vines with Muscat and red varieties. It has allowed them to modernize the famous “Matola wine”. In addition to the standard visits, they offer different options of personalized visits available throughout the year. The highlight definitely is the festivities of “La Verema”. During the first 15 days in September, Bodegas Faelo opens its doors for everybody. To see, learn and participate, by barefoot squashing the grapes, how wine is produced. Just like the first generation did over a hundred years ago, with the same utensils.

Marina Alta

The route of La Marina Alta includes the area of Benissa, Teulada, Xaló and Parcent. There you can visit several wineries deeply related to tourism. From Bodegas Xaló to the small family-owned wineries of Bodegas Parcent.

Marina Baja

To the South, in the Marina Baja, in Alfàs del Pí we find Bodegas Enrique Mendoza. If you happen to be there when they present the Mendoza Enoescapade Experience, take the opportunity.
